I have been slowly replacing all of my plastic rotating heads with this Stailess steel head. Note* WHEN YOU BUY THIS HEAD MAKE SURE IT COMES IN A BOX WITH THE ARRAY OF NOZZLES AND THE ADJUSTING SCREW DRIVER. This dealer does provide all of the items in a box and the delivery was exceptionally fast...
I replaced the single spray rainbirds with the dual head for a few months ago due to dying flowers. Perfect in California heat -- no clogging & no problem adjusting.
I love these gear-driven water sprinklers. I bought a couple plastic ones at Lowes and decided I'd like one with a more stable base, so picked up this one here.
I give it five stars for the following:
It's FAST (spins about twice as fast as my other gear-driven models) but has very even coverage and wets the whole lawn well. It has a rubber boot over its output head, which lets you turn it to various settings that affect the spray; you can let it spray in a jet (unhindered) or turn the aperture so it blocks part of the spray, which makes it spread out more and cover the grass closer to the sprinkler as well. It also has a water-valve built into its body (near the bottom of the upright bit) that lets you turn the water off in a hurry if you're nearer to it than to the faucet. This allows you to turn down the pressure, too, without turning it all the way off; I get better control doing it there, than I do trying to manage my faucet (it's an irrigation line and it's touchy). Unlike some sprinklers, this one has a feature that lets you disable the 'arc limiters' -- the plastic rings that let you set up how far it will turn before turning back. I like to go in a full circle, but with my other sprinklers (that don't have this feature), they have to hit the ring and turn back around -- this one lets you flip a lever out of the way of them, and it'll turn in a complete circle. That tiny sliver of lawn the others neglect is covered with this sprinkler.
I give it three stars, however, for the base. It's advertised as being weighted (which it is), but with the sometimes-high pressure I get from my irrigation lines (and the air that is often carried along with it), this sprinkler actually gets knocked backward with the force coming out of its own sprayer. If I don't place it on a completely flat place, it'll fall over on its own. I'll probably try to find some of those lawn spikes to tack it down with. Considering the weight of the base and its stability is one of the features they advertise, I found it lacking in that area.
So I've given it four stars, overall.
It's a novelty and much more interesting than your average sprinkler. Its range is consistent, although the trajectory could be a little bit further. The best part is the size of the frog, which scares my dog, thus keeping him away from the area I am watering!
I am a sucker for impulse sprinklers. I grew up in farm country, and it always brings back memories of my youth when I hear the familiar putt-putt-putt of an impulse sprinkler, and see the water arcing out over the grass. The main drawback to them, for me, has always been that they only water in a circle. There were always dry spots where they didn't overlap. Well Gilmour has put an end to that limitation. This sprinkler is absolutely amazing. It can be made to water a rectangle, triangle, or any random shapes that your yard might be made of. It is simple and logical to setup, and holds its settings with no trouble. After using the first one, I bought two more, which allows me to water our entire oddly shaped yard using 3 sprinklers, without wasting water on concrete walks, patios, windows and other things that don't benefit from watering. I would recommend getting the large size, even if it seems like it would be overkill. To achieve the maximum distance range that is specified for either size, you have to eliminate any dispersion, and focus the water into a fairly solid stream. When you do this, the result is VERY uneven water saturation. If you get this larger size of sprinkler, then you can plan to disperse the water, for more even coverage, and still get reasonably good distance range.
