Orbit H2O-6 Gear Drive Sprinkler, Spike B #58573

Cheap Orbit H2O-6 Gear Drive Sprinkler, Spike B #58573 Review

I have 7 of these around the perimeter of my yard and they have worked fine for the past 2 years. I bought these (one or two at a time) because I have very hard well water and normal impact sprinklers would clog up with calcium deposits. I haven't had any problems with these Orbit gear-drive sprinklers.

There are 3 controls for the units. The green disk on top sets the spray effect (short, medium, or long) buy inserting a tooth into the water stream. So if you want a long distance, the tooth is minimal. If you want a short distance then the tooth is large. I just rotate the top green disk to set this.

The second control is the next ring down that controls the spray pattern: stream, mist, etc. There are about 8 options (sorry, I didn't walk outside to count them).

The last control are the two green rings at the bottom and these control the start and stop sweep angle. So I can go all the way around (360 degrees), or limit it to a smaller angle. Note however, that even if you a line the start and stop, it goes all the way around one way, then back all the way around the other. That's just the way the gear-drive Orbit unit works. It won't keep spinning around and around the same way like a free spinning impact sprinkler (with the reversing stops removed). It isn't a problem, just be aware of it ahead of time.

I gave this only 4 stars because there are 2 things that this design lacks: (1) a hose screw ring and (2) a range limiter. (1) In order to screw this onto a garden hose, you have to spin the entire silver colored body onto the hose. Not a big deal since I use this in a semi-permanent installation. (2) A range limiter would allow me to set some small portion that limits the range (instead of limiting the range for the whole circle). I'd like to use the "long" range to form a large circle, but also have some range limiter to prevent the spray from hitting the house (and calcifying the wall and wooden fence). Other people make stand-alone metal posts that do this, I'd just like it to be included in the sprinkler.

Anyway, I've been very happy with my seven 2-year old units.
